It is known that inflammatory bowel disease is a risk factor for primary sclerosing cholangitis. Findings from this retrospective cohort study suggest proctocolectomy with permanent ileostomy confers protection for both mortality and liver transplantation, pointing towards a possible role of the colonic microbiota in the pathophysiology of primary sclerosing cholangitis.
