Dr. Josep Malvehy

Dr Josep Malvehy is Director of the Skin Cancer Unit. Hospital Clinic at the University of Barcelona, Spain, and Investigator of the Institut d ‘investigació biomédica August Pi I Sunyer” (IDIBAPS).

Dr Malvehy graduated in 1992 from the Medicine University of Barcelona in Spain and obtained his diploma in Dermatology and Venereology in 1996 and the doctoral degree of the University of Barcelona in genetics and diagnostics of skin cancer in 2006. He is a consultant dermatologist at the Dermatology Department and director of the Melanoma Unit at the Hospital Clinic of Barcelona since 2003, and Director of the Innovation Program of the “Institut de Medicina i dermatologia” (ICMID) of the same Hospital. He is a professor at the University of Barcelona.

The main field of expertise is skin tumours with interest in the diagnosis and treatment of premalignant and malignant neoplasms of the skin (melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancer). He is an investigator of the IDIBAPS (Institut d’Investigació August Pi i Sunyer). Special areas of research and innovation are non-invasive techniques of skin cancer diagnosis (dermoscopy, digital follow-up, confocal Microscopy, OCT, HD-OCT, LC-OCT, impedanciometry, spectroscopy) and treatment of Ak, epithelial skin cancer, Merkel cell carcinoma, and melanoma. Other main fields of research are artificial intelligence, genetics of melanoma, skin cancer susceptibility, skin carcinogenesis, and teledermatology. He is also involved in research grants in big data and AI, biomarkers, and treatment of skin cancer.

Dr Malvehy is the author of more than 400 scientific publications in international journals, main editor of 3 books in diagnostics of skin cancer, and author of more than 30 book chapters (H index: 50; Date of application: 17/02/2019). Since 2003 he has been professor of the European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology, and since 2004 professor of the American Academy of Dermatology. He is also a board member of the World Melanoma Society (Spanish representative), European Association of Dermato Oncology (EADO) (Spanish representative), International Dermoscopy Society (IDS), International Group of Confocal Microscopy (IGCM), and the International Teledermatology Society (ITS), EDF (European Dermatology Forum), Nevus International (leader of the scientific group); Member of International and National Scientific Societies (European Dermatology Forum (EDF), Spanish Academy of Dermatology and Venereology (AEDV), European Organisation of Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC), European Society of Medical Oncology (ESMO), The GenoMel Consortium, Ibero Latin College of Dermatology (CILAD).
